The mountains around Mogao Caves (莫高窟) are a hostile place. Intense heat, little shade, and a lack of water makes any journey here treacherous. But still for hundreds of years people have journeyed here to worship and seek enlightenment. They’ve left evidence of their dedication in the form of stupas, pagodas, and monuments.
Just 10 minutes in this heat was enough to send me scurrying for the shade and relative comfort of the visitor’s center.
